Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is the largest civic agency of the world in terms of area after Tokyo (Japan)

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is one of the largest municipal bodies in the world, which provides civic services to more than estimated population of 11,007,835 million citizens in the capital city.

Apart from this, there are two other municipal corporations are in Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council and Delhi Cantonment Board.

MCD serves 95 percent of the total land area whereas provides services to 98 percent of the total population of Delhi.

In terms of area, it is next only to Tokyo (Japan), which covers total area of 1,397.3 km?.

MCD came into existence on the 7th of April 1958 under and Act of Parliament. Since then, the Municipal Body has always been alive in its constitution and functioning to the growing needs of citizens.

In the last election held in 2007, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed 168 out of total 272 wards in the MCD. Congress won 64 seats while remaining went to other parties and independents.

Prof. Rajni Abbi is the current Mayor of Delhi and Subhash Arya of BJP is leader of the house. Jaikishan Sharma from Congress is the leader of opposition in MCD.

Now MCD has been trifurcated into three civic bodies which are-North, South and East. While North and South bodies will be total 104 wards each, there will be 64 wards in East.

For the newly trifurcated agencies election process is going on which is to be held on 15th April. 50 percent of the total seats have been reserved for ladies in the election.
