New Delhi, Sep 28 (ANI): Terming the building collapse incident in Old Delhi's Chandni Mahal area to be unfortunate, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday held the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) responsible for the tragedy.

Dikshit said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were probing the matter and were also providing free medical aid to the injured.

"The MCD commission had announced that they are inquiring the matter. We have consulted the MCD commission; let us see what they are going to come out with. We have made required arrangements in the hospitals and soon we will give compensation to the victims," said Dikshit.

"They are getting free treatment and till last night and even morning, the (rescue officials) have not gone deep down in the debris, let us see what will happen next," she added.

Dikshit extended her condolences to the kin of the victims, saying that the incident was unfortunate.

"I am not answerable on the behalf of MCD, but it is really-really disappointed especially when we lose many lives," she said.

Dikshit later said that most of the injured had received head injuries and the government would provide compensation to all the victims.

"According to the doctors, there is nothing so serious but it will take time to the victims to recover as maximum received head injuries. We will do whatever we can, maximum. Naturally, the government will bear the burden of their treatment... of course, we will compensate them but we will announce that after some time," she said.

At least five people were killed and 25 others injured after a building collapsed in Old Delhi's Chandni Mahal on Tuesday night.

According to some eyewitnesses, there were women and children among those killed. Moreover, media reports allege that the numbers could rise since there has been no official confirmation of the death toll. (ANI)
