Then Chief Minister Keshu Bhai patel had resigned from his post due to defeat of party in by-election and Narendra Modi took the charge of Chief Minister of Gujarat in October in 2001. When Modi took over the charge of Gujarat, its economy was reeling under the adverse effects of several natural calamities including an earthquake in January 2001. However Modi fought with all the odds and made the state in one of the leading states in India. He has made much achievement during this time and noticed many national and international acclaim.
Apart from the natural calamities occurred in 2001, he has to face the Godhra and Gujarat riots in 2002, which began a blot on his developmental icon. He has to face criticism from many sections for not handling the situations and even NDA allies like DMK and TDP in the central govt. demanded his resignation. At last Modi submitted his resignation and state has to face new election. After the riot it was forecasted that Modi's comeback would be difficult but results declared shown that he got 127 seats out of 182 in the 10th State assembly election held.
In 2007 state assembly election, once again he repeated his performance and got 122 seats and now he is the longest serving chief minister of Gujarat.
Modi is the person who is devoted to his goal completely and leaves no stone unturned to achieve this. Generally his decision irked his own supporter but his dedication towards the Gujarat don's cared them. It is said that he ordered the demolition of many Hindu temples, which were not built with the proper govt. sanctions. However this move was criticised by Vishwa Hindu Parishad at that time.
