Jordan: Modern Kingdom amidst Desert with Historic Past
The Ottoman Empire collapsed after World War I that provided an opportunity to British to govern much of Middle East including Jordan. Britain carved out a semi-autonomous region of Trans Jordan from Palestine in the early 1920, and later on this area gained independence in 1946. In 1950 the name Jordan was adopted in place of Trans Jordan. After that King Hussein ruled Jordan from 1953 to 1999 and following his death his son King Abdullah II assumed the throne. Since then, he has consolidated his power and undertaken aggressive economic reforms. Jordan became a part of global economy by becoming the member of World Trade Organization in 2000 and European Free Trade Association in 2001.
