London, Feb 23 (ANI): Cherie Blair, the wife of former British prime minister Tony Blair, has sued the publisher of the now-defunct British tabloid News of the World after it emerged she was an alleged victim of phone-hacking.
Blair filed a writ at the High Court in London on Tuesday against the News Group Newspapers (NGN) and Glenn Mulcaire, the private detective jailed in 2007 for voicemail interception.
There have been previous suspicions Blair was targeted by the News of the World, but she has not so far been confirmed as a victim of phone hacking, The Telegraph reports.onfirmation that Cherie's phone was hacked while her husband was the prime minister would raise serious questions about security in Downing Street during Blair's tenure.
The case is likely to prove uncomfortable for Tony Blair, who is godfather to Rupert Murdoch's youngest daughter Chloe.
Blair was present in March 2010 when Murdoch's two daughters by his third wife, Wendi, were baptised on the banks of the Jordan.
If NGN accepts that Cherie's phone was hacked, she would become the second figure to have become a victim while living or working in Number 10.
Earlier this month Tony Blair's former communications chief, Alastair Campbell, was paid damages by NGN after it admitted hacking his phone. (ANI)
