Congress-led coalition will win Kerala polls with majority: Tharoor

Thiruvananthapuram, May 13 (ANI): Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday said the rule of the Communist Government in Kerala would be defeated by the United Democratic Front (UDF) by a narrow, yet clear majority.

In Kerala, the Assembly poll results are heading towards a photo finish with the United Democratic Front (UDF) having a slender edge over the Left Democratic Front (LDF).

There is a close fight between the UDF and the LDF. Out of the 122 results available so far, 62 have gone to the Congress-led UDF and 60 to the CPI (M)-led LDF.

Addressing mediapersons here, Tharoor said: "Well, it looks like it is going to be a fairly close election. But the fact is as of now, we are leading, the Congress-led coalition is leading in about 74 of the 140 seats, which is a narrow majority, but it is still looking like a very clear majority."

Highlighting the failure of the LDF in bringing about development in the state, Tharoor conceded that Achuthanandan's public aura had emerged as a game-changer in the polls.

"The misgovernance of the CPM, which was our principal message, the Communists had essentially been absent from the field of governance in most of their five years in office until they suddenly woke up a few months before the elections, that message may have been offset by the Left campaign about alleged corruption, particularly trudging up old corruption accusations against members of our constituent front," said Tharoor.

"And at the same time, there was a kind of popular image of the 87-year-old chief minister Mr. Achuthanandan, which itself may have contributed a certain element in the last stages of the campaign," he added. (ANI)
