The party claims its foundation date as 26 December 1925. Due to its presence in the different parts of India the party has been recognized as national party. It is the only Indian party that has contested the general elections on the same symbol.

Communist party of India was supporting United Progressive Alliance UPA after UPA came to power in the year 2004. But the party withdrew support in the year 2008 on the basis of Indo-US atomic energy treaty. And news of communist party of India hogged the limelight.
