FM pledges to table coal blocks report in Parliament

Amid chaos over the coal scam in Parliament, Finance Minister P Chidambaram Wednesday assured the opposition that CAG report on allocation of coal blocks would be tabled in both the houses of Parliament.

"This morning, we have issued notice to both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, to request the speaker and the chairman to fix a date to lay the report on the table of both Houses simultaneously," said Chidambaram.

"Once they give us a date, we will lay all three reports. One on coal, one the dial and one on the UMPP (Ultra Mega Power Project) Sasan. All three will be laid. There is no delay at all and I want you to make it clear that there has been no delay whatsoever," he added.

An alleged mega financial scam was unearthed when the Comptroller and Auditor General of India in it's report stated that government has allocated some coal blocks between 2004 and 2009 to public and private sector companies in throw away prices without auctioning, which cause the central exchequer a ‘windfall’ loss of Rs. 1.80 lakh crore.

According to the draft CAG report on coal allocation, undue benefits of Rs 15,849 crore to Reliance Power, by way of surplus coal allocation for two of its Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs).

The draft report pegs benefit to Reliance Power from surplus allocation for the Sasan UMPP at Rs 4,875 crore.
