Congress will form govt. in Uttarakhand, Punjab: Harish Rawat

New Delhi, Mon, 05 Mar 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 5 (ANI): Congress leader Harish Rawat on Monday said the party would form the government in Uttarakhand and Punjab after votes are counted and results are known on Tuesday.

" See, we are going to form the government in Uttarakhand and Punjab. We will win with a majority in these two states," Rawat told media here.

Commenting on the polls in Uttar Pradesh, Rawat said: "Rahul (Rahul Gandhi) factor will help us in UP."

"The people of the state have cast their vote and decided the numbers and I am confident that the public has given a healthy majority to the Congress party," he added.

On whether the Congress was thinking of a post poll alliance, Rawat said: "Let the results come. Maybe, we will form the government on our own."

Meanwhile, another party leader Pramod Tiwari has trashed the exit polls predicting bleak prospects for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

"Under no condition, I will believe that the Congress will finish at fourth or even third position. I believe that the Congress-RLD (Rashtriya Lok Dal) coalition will emerge as the single largest party," he told media in Lucknow.

"The predictions that are being made, are completely opposite to my view and that's why I won't say much on it, but I am sure that on March 6, all these predictions will be proven wrong and Congress party will emerge as the single largest party, and Rahul Gandhi will be congratulated for this result," he added.

The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

The first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phases of polling occurred on February 8, 11, 15, 19, 23, 28 respectively and March 3.

The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
