Argentina is a federation of 23 provinces in South America and few autonomous states. It is South America's 2 nd largest country and the world's 8 th . The topography of Argentina can roughly be divided into four parts, the fertile Pampas plains in the center, which is the source of Argentina's agricultural wealth, the oil-rich plateau of Patagonia in the southern half down to Tierra del Fuego, the subtropical flats of the Gran Chaco in the north, and the rugged Andes mountain range along the western border with Chile.
