Wooing to more and more customers, Bharti Airtel, the biggest GSM mobile players in India on Monday has announced to begin a new price war by reducing the STD and Roaming call rate up to 43% from its current rate that will come into effect from April 30, 2008.
Airtel on April 29 has announced to cut the call rates on roaming as well as in STD by 43% to pump up the customers for communicating more and more despite being in the roaming. Now, the Airtel subscribers will have to pay only Re.1/- per minute for receiving the calls in the roaming while in outgoing they will have to spent only Re. 1/- per minute for local calls and Rs. 1.50 for STD calls. The current price for incoming call during roaming is Rs 1.75 per minute while for outgoing; it is Rs.1.40 for local call and 2.40 for STD calls.
The tariff charges in the STD has also been reduced, it would be now Rs. 1.50 per minute instead of current tariff of Rs.2.65.
Announcing its reduced tariff charges, Manoj Kohli, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel Ltd said, “Airtel has today taken another step to take forward India’s telecom story powered by enhanced affordability.”
Eyeing to a huge number of Indian customers, Kohli said, “800 million Indians are now closer than ever before.” “This initiative will particularly benefit rural customers and underlines our commitment to the nation’s growth.” he added.
Speaking on the same topic by citing ‘India without boundaries’, Sanjay Kapoor, President, Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel said, “This initiative spells the end of distance for our existing and prospective customers with 70% STD customers in India using less than 5 minutes/month on STD calls and 80% mobile customers not using their phones while roaming.”
Appreciating Airtel’s move for reducing the STD and roaming tariff, Kapoor said, “I am delighted that we are leading this endeavour, which strengthens our strategic plank of affordability”.
Positively looking over Airtel’s drive, Sanjay added, “This will help create an India making communication with loved ones easier and more affordable.”
‘India has still potential market especially in the rural areas’, as TRAI stated it earlier in the release after conducting a study last year. “There are still 700-millions of strong market available for mobile companies. By reducing the call rate, the mobile operator can enhance their business several folds”, said TRAI in its report.
At present Bharti Airtel ltd have a total of 64.26 million customers by the end of March 2008, out of which 61.98 million customers are mobile subscribers. In its landmark achievement, Bharti Airtel has been enlisted among the best performing companies in the world in the Business Week IT 100 list 2007.
