Agartala, Dec 30 (ANI): Despite several impediments, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is setting a power plant in Palatana in Tripura.
Chairman and Managing Director of ONGC, Sudhir Vasudeva met Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar on Thursday to discuss the upcoming thermal project as the company faced major difficulties in the transportation of gas turbine accessories, owing to its heavy weight.
"First of all, the problem was because of the remoteness of this place and the oversized dimension component, which had to be brought all the way from Bangladesh and in the process we have also had accidents. One unit fell down, which had to be picked up," said Vasudeva.
"The bypasses and the culverts, which were made got washed out in the monsoons. We had to create them again. This is something very difficult. A single unit was weighing more than 300 tonnes and there is no way we can bring it by road from Calcutta," he added.
He also informed that in the first phase 363.3 Mega Watts (MW) of power would be generated by May 2012 and three months later another 363.3 MW.
Vasudeva along with other officials inspected the site and reviewed the ongoing work at the construction venue.
"This is for monetisation of gas. We had large reserves of gas which was not getting monetised, so we decided that we will have this power generation here, which will supply power to all the states of the northeast. So, from that viewpoint, this project is very important," said Vasudeva.
He informed that in India the compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of energy has been 6.6 percent in comparison to 2.2 percent globally during the last decade.
The trial run of the plant would start on March 31. (ANI)
