Rajya Sabha adjurned sine die without passing Lokpal Bill

The whole country yesterday night got shocked when the much awaited Lokpal Bill yet again remain in 'hang condition' in Rajya sabha without beginning the process of casting the vote. The Speaker adjourned the Rajya Sabha sine die leaving the government in an embarrassing situation. The opposition parties have alleged the government to cook the whole drama to escape from voting as it was in minority in the upper house.

The government on the other had argued that opposition has moved 187 amendments in the bill, and government needs time to consider them.

'It was the prerogative of the government to convene the House and the Session,' said Pawan Kumar Bansal, Parliamentary Affairs Minister just after a brief 15-minute adjournment before midnight, when the House reconvened.

The prolonge debate on Lokpal bill continued till mid night amid commotion, and allegation of oppostition over government to running away from voting. At midnight 12 o' clock, the upper house was adjourn sine die without reaching any result and leaving the fate of the Lokpal bill uncertain.

The opposition has alleged the government a 'well orchestrated event' and doubt over the intention of government to pass the strong Lokpal Bill.

"The whole action was choreographed since yesterday and speakers were made to continue the debate. The minister put up a reply. His reply could not be understood by anyone, but he also continued," said BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

"It is a political and a moral defeat for the government. A government which runs away from vote has no right to remain in power. This government has been thoroughly exposed," he added accusing the government to hatch conspiracy to avoid the voting.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said, "It is a dark night for Indian democracy. Today, democracy has been disrobed in Rajya Sabha. The Prime Minister and Shri Pranab Mukherjee witnessed this as silent spectators and this conspiracy was hatched under their direction."

Noting that Parliament is supreme, he said, "the government has succeeded in subverting the Indian Parliament today. I am sure the people of the country will not spare this government."

CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury stated, "When the debate was started today, till lunch the speakers were reminded about the time constraint. After lunch people were being allowed to speak as much they wanted. It was clear they wanted to continue the debate without any conclusion."

CPI leader D Raja expressed this 'drama' a "midnight assault" of democracy.

Protecting the government from all directions allegation, Pawan Bansal said, "This is completely false. It won't be wrong if I call this charge a complete lie. We wanted the discussion to happen on Wednesday but they did not agree, they did not give their amendments."

Law Minister Salman Khurshid added, "The Opposition including the BJP had all the intention of sabotaging the Lokpal Bill. The Opposition put up more than 180 amendments. The issue was not of numbers and we did not run away."
