Baba Ramdev accuses Centre of being hesitant on black money issue

Nagpur, Tue, 20 Dec 2011 ANI

Nagpur, Dec 20 (ANI): Baba Ramdev alleged that the Central Government is hesitant in initiating procedures to repatriate illicit black money stashed in several foreign banks.

Ramdev questioned Congress party's hesitancy over declaring black money as national property.

"Why is the government not conducting the legal action to bring back black money from foreign banks? Why is only the Congress party opposed to the idea of declaring black money as national property? We had presented a proposal to the Prime Minister to lodge a general FIR under the Prevention of Corruption and Money Laundering Act. Why is the Congress party opposed to this move?" said Ramdev at a news conference in Nagpur.

The yoga guru also accused the government of misleading the country on the scope and efficacy of the measures taken to bring back money stashed in foreign banks.

"The Indian government has been lying to the people on the issues of corruption and black money. The government says black money will not be returned with the suggestions we have given. If the government recalls large currency notes and imposes a single transaction tax, the issue of black money will be resolved," said Ramdev.

As per estimations of Global Financial Integrity, a Washington based think tank, between 2002 and 2006, the annual amount of money laundering from India was in the range 16 billion dollars, nearly 1.5 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). (ANI)
