Shahjahanpur, Dec 15 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday lashed out at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for allegedly swindling funds out of a national employment guarantee scheme.
"Uttar Pradesh did not get the benefit from the national employment scheme. Only the members and ministers of BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) benefited from it. The money has been eaten away by an elephant in Lucknow," he said, while addressing a rally here.
Gandhi, who is on the third day of his five-day tour as part of his campaign in Uttar Pradesh, said there is money in the country because of the hard work done by the people of Uttar Pradesh.
"This money does not belong to the Delhi Government, nor does it belong to the Uttar Pradesh Government. Where has this money come from? It has been earned by the development you have brought to this nation," said Gandhi.
"When people from Uttar Pradesh go to Maharashtra, Haryana and Punjab and work for its development, the Central Government receives money," he added.
Gandhi, who is leaving no stone unturned in giving a tough fight to the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the forthcoming state assembly elections, is visiting various parts of the state.
He has focused equally on the lower caste Dalits, Muslims, socially backward classes and marginalised Hindus during his visits to Uttar Pradesh.
The Uttar Pradesh elections, which are scheduled in the early part of 2012, is being seen as a stepping-stone for the Congress Party to establish a firm political base in India's fifth largest and most populous state before the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
