Allahabad, Nov.14 (ANI): Congress leader Digvijay Singh has criticised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for suggesting that Singh could become the state's next chief minister if the Congress secures amajority in next year's state assembly elections.
"Nothing could be more farcical than this. I am not a voter in Uttar Pradesh. Perhaps she (Mayawati) has forgotten that to become the chief of Uttar Pradesh one has to be a voter in Uttar Pradesh," Singh told reporters in Allahabad.
He claimed Mayawati had slightly lost her mental balance in face of opposition from the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi, scion of Nehru-Gandhi family that controls the party.
"Ever since Rahul Gandhi is playing proactive role, Mayawati is unable to tolerate the opposition from Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party, so she is losing her balance slightly," added Singh.
The 403-member legislative assembly goes to polls in May 2012.
Rahul Gandhi is putting his leadership credentials to test by leading the Congress campaign for assembly elections next year in Uttar Pradesh, a poor and caste-ridden state with 200 million people, equivalent to the world's fifth-most populous country and considered a political barometer for India as a whole.
