On Board Special Aircraft, Nov 12(ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, today said that he would welcome any move to give a more responsible position in the Congress party to Rahul Gandhi.
"It is a party matter. As far as the Cabinet is concerned, I have said it before as well that I have requested Rahul Gandhi many times, but he did not agree. I can't say anything about the party, but if Rahul is given a new responsibility, I would welcome it," Dr. Singh said while interacting with mediapersons on a flight back to India after a four-day visit to Maldives.
Several Congress leaders, including General Secretary Digvijay Singh, had earlier suggested that Rahul Gandhi is the future leader of the Congress and the country,
Digvijay Singh had said that Gandhi was now a mature person with sound political instincts, and can become the Prime Minister.
"I think it is time that Rahul can become the Prime Minister. Rahul is now 40 and he has been working for the party for the last seven to eight years," Digvijay Singh had said.
"The scion of Gandhi family had the right qualities, instincts and experience to take up the mantle of the prime ministership now," he had added.
Dr. Singh, holding the prime ministership for the second term, has a tenure up to May 2014. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
