Gorakhpur, Oct 21 (ANI): Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad visited children afflicted by Japanese Encephalitis at a hospital in Gorakhpur and enquired about efforts to control the killer virus that has already claimed at least 450 lives in the state.
Azad, accompanied by senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh, and health ministry officials visited the hospital where scores of kids afflicted with the disease have been admitted.
Azad said he would visit the other hospitals in the area to make on-the-spot assessment of the situation and would address a news conference on Friday.
"I will talk to officers. I will also visit District Hospital in Siddharth Nagar and other hospitals that come in the way tomorrow (October 21). After that I will discuss with officers then I will address a news conference at 2 p.m." Azad told the media here.
Over 300 encephalitis-afflicted patients are undergoing treatment at other government hospitals.
Encephalitis is caused by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water. Therefore, hygiene becomes essential in preventing the disease from spreading.
The symptoms of encephalitis include headache, fever, convulsions, drowsiness, fatigue and the inflammation of the brain. (ANI)
