Washington, Sept 9(ANI): The United States is investigating a possible al-Qaeda plot to detonate a vehicle-borne bomb in Washington or New York around the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.
US security agencies suspect that terrorists may have entered the country to execute the plot, which, according to them, originated from Pakistan's tribal areas along the Afghan border.
Numerous intelligence officials said though the terror threat is worrisome; it was based on raw intelligence and is unconfirmed, The Washington Post reports.
"As we know from the intelligence gathered from the [bin Laden] raid, al-Qaeda has shown an interest in important dates and anniversaries, such as 9/11.In this instance, it's accurate that there is specific, credible but unconfirmed threat information," Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Matthew Chandler said.
US intelligence officials briefed President Obama and Congress about the threat.
Osama Bin Laden had vowed to attack US again around 9/11 attacks anniversary before his death.
Law enforcement officials said there were several references to 9/11attack anniversary and vague ideas to execute US terror attacks in the handwritten material found at Bin Laden's compound.
Police said it would cordon off 'frozen zone' area, where Obama and former president George W. Bush would observe 9/11 attack anniversary.
New York Police said they would reinforce patrols across the city, especially in bridges, tunnels and other transportation hubs, and use even more bomb-sniffing dogs.
"The United States government has already significantly enhanced its security posture in advance of the 9/11 anniversary to protect the country against possible terrorist threats. Nevertheless, the president directed the counter terrorism community to redouble its efforts in response to this credible but unconfirmed information," a White House source told the Washington Post.
