Alexandria, July 27 (ANI): The Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai has reportedly accepted that he received funding from Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence.
During bail hearing, Gordon Kromberg, the prosecution lawyer, began by telling the court that Fai had admitted to receiving funds from the ISI, The Express Tribune reports.
However, Fai's lawyers, Nina Ginsberg and Khurram Wahid, painted a case of Fai maintaining independence from the ISI's viewpoint.
According to the defense, Fai had received funds from the ISI, but he had always raised the voice for the cause of Kashmiris. He always took care to present a balanced point of view, by inviting both Indians and Pakistanis.
Fai's lawyers handed out a statement prepared by Fai.
"It has been my lifelong commitment to the people of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, irrespective of their religious background and cultural affiliations to help achieve the right of self-determination to decide their future. God willing, I will continue to do that in days, weeks, months and years to come," the statement said.
Fai was released on payment of a 100,000-dollar bond after appearing before the US District Court on Tuesday for a detention hearing.
He was arrested last week on charges that he tried to influence the policy of the White House and Congress on Kashmir while working under the supervision of the ISI.
US Magistrate Judge John Anderson released Fai into the custody of his wife and placed him under home detention with electronic monitoring.
Fai is the executive director of the Kashmiri American Council. He was arrested on a charge of being an unregistered agent of a foreign government. (ANI)
