Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh), July 20 (ANI): Devotees and admirers of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader welcomed him back on Wednesday on his return from the United States.

He was away in America where he took part in the Kalachakra Festival for World Peace at Washington.

Wearing colourful costumes, the Tibetan artistes performed staged cultural events on his arrival at the Kangra Airport.

"He has come from US, Washington DC after the Kalachakra initiation so we have come here for his welcome," said Sonam Tenzin, a Tibetan artiste.

During his visit to the West, the spiritual leader also met US President, Barack Obama in a high-profile meeting.

"Today, there will be more audience because today is a special occasion and the event has been organised by the Tibetan welfare office," added Sonam Tenzin, the Tibetan artiste.

The Dalai Lama's devotees also appreciated his initiative to reinforce global peace.

"Now he is more popular in the world considering that we have got some chances of freedom. So we are just happy right now," noted Tenzin Yangzom, spokesperson of Tibetan Youth Congress.

The Kalachakra, an ancient ritual that includes Buddhist teachings, prayers, meditation and dance, was observed to coincide with the birthday celebrations of the 76-year-old Tibetan leader.

The Dalai Lama was born on July 6, 1935, at a Taktser hamlet in northeastern in Tibet and was recognised at the age of two as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his non-violent campaign for democracy and freedom in his homeland.

Recently, the Dalai Lama, who has relinquished political power in the Tibetan government-in-exile, declined the offer to remain as its nominated symbolic head of the Tibetan people.

An estimated 80,000 Tibetans, along with the Dalai Lama, arrived in India in 1959 after an unsuccessful uprising against Chinese rule.
