Thiruvananthapuram, May 24 (ANI): Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has promised that all Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in the state will be given rice at one rupee per kilogram from September.
The decision has been taken at the first meeting of his expanded cabinet on Monday.
Chandy said Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob will meet Union Minister K V Thomas on June 4 and a final decision on the Centre's help in introducing this scheme in the state will be taken.
He further said the government would provide an immediate assistance of three lakh to the family of Shari, the Kiliroor sex scandal victim, and will bear the education expense of her daughter.
The Cabinet has decided to request the Governor to convene a two-day session of the Assembly from June 1.
Thirteen new ministers, including nine from Congress, have been inducted into the cabinet at the swearing ceremony held at Rajbhawan in Thiruvananthapuram last evening.
The name of speaker and deputy speaker of Kerala assembly will be decided later.
Sixty-seven-year-old Chandy, elected for the 10th consecutive time from Puthupally in Kottayam District, assumed office as Kerala's 21st chief minister on Wednesday.
He takes over from Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) stalwart V.S. Achuthanandan, who resigned as Chief Minister, last Saturday, following defeat in the Assembly polls. (ANI)
