Siliguri, Apr 14 (ANI): Slamming the 34-year-old "misrule" of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM)-led Left Front government, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi today asked the people of West Bengal to elect a government of "aam admi" that would bring development and prosperity to the state.
"We, the Congress and Trinamool Congress are fighting together and will give a government that will bring development to West Bengal," Gandhi said at a public rally at Naxalbari near here.
Expressing concern at the rising unemployment and underdevelopment in the state, Gandhi appealed to the voters to end the misrule of the CPM in the upcoming elections.
"I urge all of you to end the misrule of the CPI-M government. The government must be of the common man and for the common man and the government must be of the future. We would give you a government that will take West Bengal ahead in terms of development, growth and amity among its people," he added.
He accused the party of neglecting the needs and issues of the people.
"The kind of industrial growth and employment that should have been created in West Bengal did not take place. This is because the government of West Bengal focuses on the prosperity of its cadres and leaders first, and then about the people," said Gandhi.
The state will have elections in six phases. The first phase of voting will take place on April 18, second phase on April 23, third phase on April 27, fourth phase on May 3, fifth phase on May 7 and sixth phase on May 10.
The total number of assembly constituencies in West Bengal is 294, of which 68 are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and 16 for the Scheduled Tribes.
The Election Commission has said that polling will take place at 51,919 polling stations. (ANI)
