New Delhi, April 9 (IANS) The Congress Monday did not comment on a Ahmedabad court verdict convicting 23 persons in a 2002 riots case, saying that it was not necessary to comment on every judicial judgment and appeals could be filed over the verdict.
"It is not necessary to comment on every judicial judgment and one should not express joy or happiness on the decision of the trial court because it is first level and there are appeals on the same," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.
Reacting to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comparing the verdict with the trials in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases, Singhvi said: "They (the BJP) should know how many prosecutions are going on in connection with the 1984 riots cases."
A special trial court in Ahmedabad Monday acquitted 23 people, but also convicted 23 for the massacre of 23 people in Ode village of Anand district during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The case relates to March 1, 2002 when, soon after the Godhra train carnage, rioters set fire to a building, killing 23 Muslims trapped inside in Pirwali Bhagol area of Ode.
