Lalit Modi to appeal against verdict favouring Kiwi cricketer Cairns

London, Tue, 03 Apr 2012 ANI

London, Apr 3(ANI): Former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi has confirmed that he will appeal against the verdict that favours former Kiwi cricketer Chris Cairns.

Cairns was awarded legal costs and 90,000 pounds in damages following a two-week trial over Modi's tweet that alleged the former was involved in the match fixing in the now defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL).

Justice David Bean of the London High Court granted Modi leave to appeal only against the amount of damages, but Modi indicated that he would make an application to a court of appeal to overturn the verdict.

"I have seen the judgment. All I want to say at the moment is that we are appealing the judgment," stuff.co.nz quoted Modi's tweet, as saying.

Modi's public relation officer, Phil Mepham, confirmed that he would lodge an appeal before the April 20 deadline.

"The appeal is in the process of being lodged and will be done before the April 20 deadline. There is no advantage or disadvantage to it being lodged either sooner or later, so will be submitted once the technical details behind the appeal have been agreed," he added. (ANI)
