Delhi,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Sun, 25 Mar 2012 IANS

New Delhi, March 25 (IANS) A 22-year-old girl Sunday committed suicide in the national capital by jumping in front of a metro train, prompting the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to issue an "appeal" to citizens to cooperate in preventing suicides.

According to a DMRC Spokesperson, the incident occurred at 11.27 a.m. Sunday morning at Malviya Nagar metro station in south Delhi.

"The girl was 22 years old and belonged to Rohtas in Bihar," Additional DCP of Police B.S. Gurjar said, refusing to name the victim.

"She was here with her sister and brother-in-law. Her family has been informed," he said.

A DMRC spokesperson added: "The CCTV footage seems to suggest that this was a planned suicide."

Hours after the incident, the DMRC issued a press statement, appealing to people to cooperate in preventing these suicides.

"The recent spate of suicides on the Delhi Metro are extremely unfortunate. We appeal to all passengers to help us in curtailing this tendency," a statement issued by chief public relation officer of the DMRC, Anuj Dayal said.

"All passengers are requested to be alert at the platform when metro trains are approaching and stop any fellow passenger who attempts to cross the yellow line before the train comes to a complete halt," he said.
