Bhagalpur, Mar 5 (ANI): Backing veteran social activist Anna Hazare's call that politicians should reveal the amount of money spent during their campaigns before assembly polls in five states, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday accused the Congress Party of splurging huge amounts of money and demanded that the ruling party should tell the nation about its expenses.
"The common man under the Right To Information act can ask any political party for any information. You cannot challenge the right to seek information. It is true that the way money was splurged by the ruling party; people need to know how their money was spent," said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.
Hazare had earlier in the day asked politicians to reveal their poll expenses.
"The money spent during election campaign belongs to the citizens of the country, and they have the right to know how their money was spent," Hazare told media in New Delhi.
"Transparency should be there. The public should be made aware about the money that is spent by the politicians, because it is not their money, it is the money given by the public. If the public has given you money, then you should be giving the details about it to them," he added.
Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur had assembly elections from January 28 to March 3. The results would be announced on Tuesday. (ANI)
