Kolkata, Feb 23 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supporters staged a protest here on Thursday against the killing of two of their comrades, allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists.

The CPI-M accused Trinamool Congress activists of killing former CPI-M legislator Pradip Tah and activist Kamal Gayen with spears and rods.

"After seeing the rally which was taken out in Burdwan, the leaders of the Trinamool Congress got scared. The government is scared and it does not want the strike, which we have called for on February 28 in Burdwan and in the entire country, and that is why they have attacked our leaders," said CPI-M leader Anadi Sahu.

According to media reports, Burdwan police have detained four TMC supporters in connection with the case.

Sahu said the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took over the reins last year.

"The attacks on the workers of the left parties like CPI-M and CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) have been taking place since the new government was formed. But now, atrocities are being committed on our mothers and sisters and they are being raped. The chief minister, however, is denying these reports says this is not true. The law and order situation in West Bengal state is very bad and this department, which is headed by Chief Minister has completely failed to deliver," he said.

Earlier this month, Banerjee had lashed out at the opposition for fabricating rape cases with an aim of tarnishing the image of her government. (ANI)
