Agra, Feb 8 (ANI): The Congress party has expressed confidence about securing a clear majority in Uttar Pradesh elections.
Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh told media here: "We have received reports of voting being done in the favour of Congress. We are fully hopeful that the undercurrent that was being seen in the favour of Congress, has turned into reality. This undercurrent is turning into a wave. We are hopeful that the Congress party will receive clear majority."
Singh claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have fared poorly in the polls.
"All three, BSP, Samajwadi Parry (SP) and BJP are our competitors but BJP is out, they can be seen nowhere. The graph of BSP is deteriorating with time. Now in alternative, there is Congress and Samajwadi Party, so we are saying that Congress party will lead this state on the path of growth and development and will work towards decreasing the crime rate," said Singh.
An impressive 62 to 64 percent voter turnout was recorded on Wednesday registered in the first phase of assembly elections for 55 seats.
The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state. new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March. The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
