Amritsar, Jan 21 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh stepped up attack on the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance ahead of the upcoming assembly polls in Punjab, blaming it for the state's deteriorating economic condition.
Addressing a gathering of supporters in Punjab's Amritsar city, Dr. Singh urged the masses to vote for the Congress, while highlighting the point that Punjab is no longer number one, as it was earlier.
"It is very unfortunate that Punjab is no longer ranked number one among the states of India as it was earlier. The present government of Punjab has completely failed in restoring Punjab's economy and bringing it on track of progress," said Singh.
Lambasting the state government for the 'mess', the Prime Minister struck a chord with the supporters by comparing Punjab's steady decline with the rapid strides made by Congress party-ruled Haryana state.
"Though both states began to progress at nearly the same time, it is unfortunate that your state, Punjab, is even lagging behind Haryana," rued Singh.
During the rally, Singh also mentioned about his deep connection with Punjab.
"My ties with Punjab goes back a long way and I share a deep connection with the state. I spent my early days in Punjab, first as a student and later as a teacher. The memories of those days are still fresh in my mind," added Singh.
Punjab is one of five states due to hold elections this year, as it will go to polls on January 30.
Election analysts have stated that Punjab assembly polls would be closely fought fight between the ruling SAD-BJP alliance and Congress Party. (ANI)
