New Delhi, Mar.3 (ANI): Speaking on the increased racial attacks on Asian students in Australia, Visiting Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told ANI that Indian students are not being singled out, and added that his government has asked the Department of Criminology to conduct a data analysis on the attacks.
"We don't believe that Indian students are singled out, but we can't assert that. That is why we have asked the Institute of Criminology to do the study," said Smith.
Australian Police don't compile statistics on the basis of origin.
Smith also admitted that there had been a number of assaults on Indians with racial overtone in Australia, especially in Melbourne,.
"We have zero tolerance for attacks. We condemn it absolutely. A small number of those have racial overtones. We regard that as contemptible that does not reflect multi-cultural Australia," he asserted.
On the conviction of culprits, Smith said the Australain Government, state governments and the police are investigating these attacks.
"We have already made 70 arrests and the culprits are to be brought to justice.We want all Indian students to experience which the vast bulk of visitors to Australia have, which is a peaceful and qualitative education experience," he said.
Smith is on a three-day visit to India and will be meeting his Indian Counterpart S.M.Krishna at the Maurya Hotel here later this evening. (ANI)
