PPP government decides against tabling NRO in parliament

Islamabad, Tue, 03 Nov 2009 ANI

Islamabad, Nov.3 (ANI): The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) led government has decided against tabling the controversial National Reconciliation Ordianace (NRO), which offers complete immunity to the President and other top leaders from any legal action, in parliament.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency following a high level meeting, the ruling alliance has decided that it would not take the ordinance on the floor of the House for any discussion.

"The meeting endorsed the position taken by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on the floor of the House on Monday and decided not to take the NRO to parliament," President's Spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.

President Asif Ali Zardari, while addressing the parliamentarians of the ruling coalition at a dinner meeting, said he had asked ilani to continue working towards a political conciliation over the issue, The Daily Times reports

It may be noted that Gilani, addressing the National assembly earlier, had said that the government is yet to decide about whether to table the ordinance in parliament or not.

"We have yet to determine what to do. We have not brought it to parliament. We are considering it and holding consultations with ur allies and other friends," Gilani said. (ANI)
