Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, this 42 m high structure got completed in the year 1921. It was then known as All India War Memorial later with the independence name changed to India Gate.
An eternal flame, Amar Jawan Jyoti, which was a later addition to the structure burns day and night in remembrance of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives perished in the Indo-Pakistan War of December 1971. It is placed below the arch of India Gate.

"To the dead of the Indian armies who fell honoured in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far-east and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in India or the north-west frontier and during the Third Afghan war."
