Structure of India Gate is inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. This 42 m high structure was built in 1931. It memorialises 90,000 soldiers of Indian Army who lost their lives while fighting for their country. Names of all these soldiers are written on their walls.

Inscription on the head of India Gate reads, "To the dead of the Indian armies who fell honoured in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far-east and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in India or the north-west frontier and during the Third Afghan war."

Amar Jawan Jyoti is the eternal flame burning day and night under the arch of India Gate since 1971 to remind about the soldiers. It has four continuously burning torches on its corners.

India Gate has a hexagon complex which is spread over 3,06,000 m2 area. Republic Day Parade passes through India Gate while moving from Rashtrapati Bhavan to Red Fort.

It is customary for President, Prime Minister and visiting Guests of State to pay homage at India Gate.
