The National Gallery of Modern Art of Delhi is an art gallery where not only artwork of famous artists but also literary work of people has been put on display. Artist lovers must visit this National Gallery of Modern Art, which is situated very near to India Gate. This museum inhouses work of some of the famous artists of their period and also of the modern day artists.

Overview or Introduction:

National Gallery of Modern Art is one of the famous art gallery museum of Delhi and India. Besides Delhi it has two other branches at Mumbai and Bangalore.

This Art Gallery has more then 17,000 art and literary works of different artists. Work of people like Thomas Daniell, Raja Ravi Verma, Rabindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Jamini Roy, Amrita Sher-Gil and many more have been preserved here and is put on display.

Miniature paintings and modernist interventions are kept on display in this museum. Paintings that signified Indian movement of freedom, East India Company period over India, British period and the revolution is all displayed here through art work.

Some of the work displayed in the art gallery dates back to 1857.

Today it has an auditorium, a preview theatre, conservation laboratory, library, cafeteria and museum shop.

Brief History of National Gallery of Modern Art:

Originally this building was the palace of a Maharaja of Jaipur but later was renovated to National Gallery of Modern Art and was opened on March 29, 1954 by Government of India. Dr S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India inaugurated it.

The aim of this gallery cum museum is to protect and preserve the art and to carry out special exhibition, lectures and seminars to encourage and promote art among the youth.
