Shahid Kapoor was born on 25 February 1981 to Pankaj Kapoor and Neelima Azeem. When he was only 3 his parent got divorced and he went on to live with his mother. His father again married Supriya Pathak.
Shahid started his career working in various commercials and music videos. Later he joined Shiamak Davar Institute for the Performing Arts (SDIPA) and became a trained dancer.
He was a background dancer in Subhash Ghai's Taal that featured Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna.
In 2003 he made it to Big screen and made his Bollywood debut by featuring in Ishq Vishk. His superb acting won him a Filmfare Best Male Debut Award, Star Screen Award for Most Promising Newcomer - Male, Zee Cine Award for Best Male Debut, IIFA Awards, Best Male Debut and Stardust Superstar of Tomorrow - Male.
In 2009 he was awarded Rajiv Gandhi Award.
