Sleeping hours affect heart functioning: Study

New Delhi, Tue, 22 Jul 2008 NI Wire

The sleeping habits can affect the heart functioning, says a new report released in the American Heart Association Journal on Thursday.

The report that was based on the research conducted upon more than 93,000 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79 was performed by the researchers at the University Of Carolina School Of Public Health.

The report stated that long as well as too less sleeping hours amongst the postmenopausal women increase the risk of stroke.

The women who were receiving sleep more than 9 hours or less than 6 hours were at an increased risk of having a stroke compared to women who received the recommended 7 hours sleep at night.

For validity of its measurements, the researchers adjusted for various external factors such as socio-demographic and lifestyle conditions, depression, snoring, sleepiness symptoms, and cardiovascular diseases.

The study is in support to various other studies preceding this one, which did not prove to be effectively conclusive. The study brought forth that amongst the under observation group, 8 percent admitted getting five hours or less sleep a night, 27 percent reported getting six hours, 38 percent reported to sleep seven hours, and 23 percent reported getting eight hours. Finally, 4 percent informed they slept nine hours and only 1 percent reported getting 10 hours of sleep or even more.
