“Flexibilities for developing countries have to be adequate and appropriate for addressing the sensitivities of individual member nations,” reiterated Union Commerce Ministry Kamal Nath to WTO Director General Pascal Lamy on Friday in Geneva. He recited these words before the WTO DG to ensure India’s interest on negotiations with agricultural and Non-agricultural Marketing Access (NAMA).
Before beginning the five-day crucial mini-Ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva from July 21, India has expressed its concerns on agriculture and Nama (industrial goods).
“There can be no caveats such as number and trade volume limitations as proposed by the U.S. to the usage of these flexibilities. In agriculture, India hopes to use the revised text on the Special Products and the Special Safeguard Mechanism to help Indian promote Indian agriculture sector,” an official released statement said on Friday.
Nath is scheduled to attend a G-33 meeting before the trade talk. Moreover, he was slated to meet Alfredo Chiaradia, Secretary of state of Commerce and International Relations of Argentina in afternoon and thereafter Brazil’s Foreign Minister Celso Amorim.
These meetings were very crucial before the beginning of WTO trade talk, as India needs strong supports of developing countries to put its aspects strongly before the developed nations to protect the trade welfare of the country.
To conclude the secure and fair deal in WTO meet, India is pressurising the rich nations as ‘those’ had made such a proposal, which is favouring the rich nations. India is asking to revise Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement to make fairer deal. If it has been amended as per India’s demand, it may prove beneficial for India.
In case, the commanding nations do not do any amendment in the WTO trade deal and show inflexibility, India can walk out from Doha Round meet, as India has already warned the developed nations.
