Azamgarh, Dec.11 (ANI): Musahar, the tribal community of Uttar Pradesh's Azamgarh region which is supposed to have rats, cats and turtles as their staple diet, is waiting for a change.
The community is waiting for help from government authorities here that could actually transform their lives.
Today, the Musahar community is among the most backward and economically deprived communities of the country. They have no farms to cultivate and are compelled to survive on eating meat of rats, cats and turtles.
Members of the Musahari community have also been engaged in making plates out of leaves, used during free lunches in temples or other occasions. But the sole source of earning has also been affected.
"We make Pattals (plates) out of leaves. We earn our daily living by selling this Pattal. But now synthetic and paper plates are also available in the market and this has affected our business. We don't have any provision for farming," said Nathuni, a member of Musahar community.
"Even after 60 years of independence, Musahar community has been marginalised. These people are still starving. They live a very difficult life. Leaders only make plans but never implement their policies. The Government needs to start thinking about how to uplift these people," said Manbuhar Singh, a villager.
The government knows the concerns of Musaharis, but there has not been any visible result. By Anurag Sharma (ANI)
