Dhanbad (Bihar), Thu, 11 Dec 2008 ANI

Dhanbad (Bihar), Dec 11 (ANI): More people have died due to outbreak of cerebral malaria in Dhanbad, Jharkhand taking the toll to seven in the past four days.

Water logging problem has caused the disease to spread rapidly in the villages of the district.

More than 25 people have been admitted in hospitals. However, relatives of patients complained of lack of adequate medical facilities.

"I took my child to a government hospital. In the absence of proper treatment, my child passed away," said Jeevlal, father of a deceased.

The doctors on the other hand claimed that they were regularly visiting the camps set up to provide treatment to patients suffering from malaria.

"We are trying our best to keep a check on the fast spread of this disease. Our doctors have set up camps and are treating the patients," said Dr Narendra Bhadani, Civil Surgeon, Dhanbad.

In India, on an average, 500,000 people are affected and over 1,000 die of malaria in a year.

In some countries with a very heavy malaria burden, the disease accounts for as much as 40 per cent of public health expenditure. Almost 60 per cent of malaria cases occur among the poorest 20 per cent of the world's population. (ANI)
