Mumbai, Dec 1 (IANS) The resignation of Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil has been accepted by Governor S.C. Jamir, a Raj Bhvan official here said.
'Patil's resignation, forwarded by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh earlier in the day, has been accepted and the Chief Minister has been informed accordingly,' public relations officer Umesh Kashikar told IANS.
Deshmukh had told reporters earlier in the day that he has received Patil's resignation and that it was being forwarded to the Governor. Even while admitting that he too has offered to resign in the wake of last week's terror attack on the state capital, the chief minister said, he would keep the home portfolio to himself for the time being.
Patil, who continues to be the state's deputy chief minister - a post not recognised by the statute, had tendered his resignation Monday owning moral responsibility for the security lapses 'if any' on the part of the state's home department, Deshmukh said. His one-line resignation does not, however, mention any reason for the step, he clarified.
Patil, who had categorically told the media Sunday that there was no question of his resignation, left for his hometown Tasgaon in Sangli district Monday morning.
