Railway marks 21.91 percent revenue growth in April 2008

The Indian railway has gained Rs.4393.19 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the month of April 2008 as against last April’s revenue of Rs. 3603.72 crore marking the hefty growth of 21.91 per cent. Indian railway has carried 67.69-million tonnes of freight traffic during April 2008 compared to 61.05 million-tonnes of goods, a 10.88 percent growth in the same period of last year.

In Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) figure, Railways have gone 43641million in April 2008 while in the same period, it have covered 39806 million, the net growth of 9.63 percent.

Railway has gained several new achievements in freight carrier since last four years. In this reward, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has announced to award all railways staff with the cash prize of Rs.17.40-crore to be distributed among the staff as per ministry’s directive for registering record freight carrier in the last fiscal. Railway has registered remarkable 794- million tonnes of freight surpassing against the revised target of 790 million tonnes.

Thanking to Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Railway Chairman. K. C. Jena said, “This cash award is an unprecedented gesture of the Railway Minister to salute an equally unprecedented achievement. The Railwaymen would perform even better in the future to build the Railways into a vibrant, responsive and safe system.”

Appreciating the teamwork and performance of railwaymen, Jena said, “The zeal and zest of Railwaymen has resulted in 14.4 per cent growth in passenger earnings, 4.6 per cent in other coaching earnings, 48 per cent in sundry earnings and 13.5 per cent in freight earnings in 2007-08 compared to the previous year.”

“The projections for other indicators are also very encouraging. Gross traffic revenue is 14.5 per cent higher than the previous year and 0.2 per cent higher than the budget estimates,” added Jena. “The operating ratio is likely to be 76.3 per cent (best in the world), the End Fund Balance is likely to increase to Rs. 20,483 crore ( 27 per cent more than budgeted target) and the Cash Surplus before dividend is expected to be Rs. 25,000 crore.” Jena further said.

“All railway men deserve kudos for this heat-warming performance” applauded Railway Chairman.

While on the other hand, in total earnings in April month, Railway has disclosed the detail data of revenue came from which goods’ transport. Here is the detail:

• Rs. 1560.46 crore came from transportation of 28.82 million tonnes of coal • Rs. 965.54 crore from 12.60 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user • Rs. 377.33 crore from 7.04 million tonnes of cement • Rs. 295.08 crore from 3.12 million tonnes of food grains • Rs. 260.06 crore from 3.17 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) • Rs. 210.40 crore from 2.05 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points • Rs. 132.36 crore from 2.07 million tonnes of fertilizers • Rs. 48.52 crore from 0.74 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore Rs. 173.18 crore from 2.42 million tonnes by container service • Rs. 370.26 crore from 5.66 million tonnes of other goods.
