Ending all speculation, the police finally arrested Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray in the early hours on Tuesday (October 21) from Ratnagiri for his unremitting attack on North Indians. He is likely to be produced in Bandra court here today.
The police have also issued gag order against Thackeray by outlawing him of making any kind of provocative public speech. This has been done in respect to his previous offensive remarks on the people of North Indians.
Soon after his arrest, police has also detained a number of unruly MNS activists who have been engaged in a string of violent activities by torching public transport, shops and beating up people of non-Marathi origin in different parts of the state.
The latest in the list of his violent anti-north Indian migrant campaign across Maharashtra was brutal attack on north Indian rail exam candidates by MNS workers on Sunday (October 19).
A case has been registered against Thackeray and his supporters for rioting, mischief, endangering life and safety of others.
Meanwhile, incidents of violence were reported from various parts of the city allegedly by the MNS activists. Security has been tightened in Mumbai and other parts of the state.
‘Nobody is above the law’
As opposition blames Maharashtra government for the delay in acting against the MNS chief, commenting over the arrest, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said: “Police action against Thackeray was in right direction as nobody is above the law. Government will not tolerate people taking law into their own hands.”
A non-bailable arrest warrant (NBW) was issued by a court in Jamshedpur against Raj Thackeray for making derogatory remarks against Biharis. The court directive had come on a petition filed by Hammed Raza Khan, a lawyer, against Raj Thackeray for allegedly hurting the religious sentiments of a section of society.
