Malappuram (Kerala), Oct 13 (IANS) A village panchayat (council) in Kerala has produced a docu-fiction to promote tourism.
The 80-minute long docu-drama, brought out by the Vazhakkad panchayat, is pegged on the story of Chaliyar, one of the major rivers in Kerala, which meanders past the village. The film is fully funded by the panchayat.
'The film captures the pristine beauty of the river banks. We want to introduce the area and its beauty to the world outside. This area may develop as a tourism destination,' said K.O. Ali, president of the panchayat.
The river already hosts a limited tourism facility named 'Jalodhyan' (Waterpark), a joint venture of three village panchayats located along the Chaliyar river.
'Certain resorts and hotels in Kozhikode have also been on the look out for documentaries on these lines. They are interested in this film and we expect them to publicise compact discs of the film among their guests. This would help advertise the beauty of the village widely,' said P.V. Haseeb Rahman, director of the docu-fiction.
Vazhakkad panchayat is also planning to organise a show of the film in 14 other panchayats located upstream along the river.
'The screening of the film is to create awareness among people to keep the river clean. Indeed, there are people who dump even slaughter-house waste in the river. Unbridled sand-mining is also posing a threat to the river,' said Ali.
