Queens' jewels to go on display for diamond jubilee celebrations

London, Tue, 03 Jan 2012 ANI

London, Jan 3 (ANI): Buckingham Palace is set to display Queen's personal jewels to mark her Diamond Jubilee (60 years on the throne).

The exhibition will showcase some of the stones she is said to refer to affectionately as "my best diamonds".

They would be worth tens of millions of pounds on the open market - but this collection is priceless due to its history.

Among the items on show will be the Girls of Great Britain tiara, which the Queen wore at the state banquet for the Turkish president in November, the Daily Express reported.

Known as 'Granny's tiara', it was a wedding present to the Queen's grandmother, Queen Mary, from the girls of Great Britain and Ireland in 1893. Queen Mary gave it to the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, as a wedding present in 1947.

Also on display will be the Queen's Williamson Brooch featuring a rare pink diamond said to be the finest in existence.

Visitors will see the necklace and earrings worn by the Queen at her Coronation in 1953. The necklace was created in 1858 for Queen Victoria - the only other British monarch to celebrate a diamond jubilee.

The exhibition will take place at Buckingham Palace in August and September. (ANI)
