Melbourne, Jan 2(ANI): A Pakistani warehouse worker detained by the Australian authorities for allegedly being a security threat, has said he is not an extremist and pleaded for his release.
"I've got a beard. I can't think of any other reason (my visa was cancelled). I've got no future. I'm not a threat to this country," The Herald Sun quoted Salman Ghumman, as saying.
Ghumman was taken into custody by Australian Immigration Department officials at the Merlynston Station on December 21.
His arrest came after his Facebook account was linked to a group, which supports terrorist Aafia Siddiqui.
Australian authorities refused to divulge the reasons for ordering Ghumman to leave the country.
"The person no longer met the legal criteria to hold a visa, therefore the visa was cancelled making him an unlawful non-citizen and subject to detention," an Australian Government spokeswoman said.
An Attorney-General's department spokesperson also refused to comment on whether Pakistan authorities had been contacted or whether he faced charges.
Ghumman, who has been detained at the Maribyrnong detention centre, came to Australia in July 2010 to study accounting at Northern Melbourne Institute. (ANI)
