Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 28 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of misusing the funds granted by the Central Government for development of the region.
Addressing a public rally at Lakhimpur Kheri, Gandhi said: "Your chief minister thinks and she believes that the people of Uttar Pradesh should not get the right to employment. The people of Uttar Pradesh should not be empowered, who should have the power? Mayawati should have the power and the ministers of BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party). How? By stealing your wealth."
"We send the money to Lucknow, and there is a magical elephant there which gobbles up the funds meant for the poor," he added.
Rahul Gandhi, who has become the face of his party in Uttar Pradesh, is leaving no stones unturned in giving a tough to Mayawati-led BSP Government in the state.
The Uttar Pradesh elections, which are scheduled in the early part of 2012, is being seen as a stepping-stone for the Congress Party to establish a firm political base in India's fifth largest and most populous state before the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
