Garbage disposal, cause for strike by BJP in Trivandrum

Trivandrum, Mon, 26 Dec 2011 ANI

Trivandrum, Dec 26 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a daylong strike in Kerala's Trivandrum city on Monday, as they pressed their demand to find an immediate solution to the garbage disposal problem that has engulfed the city.

The strike has paralysed the normal life here, as public transport vehicles are off the roads. The local shopkeepers have also shut down their shops in the wake of the shutdown.

The strike, which began at 6 a.m., would continue till late evening.

Locals here are troubled by the garbage menace in the city, as the panchayat authorities have shut down the Vilappilsala Solid Waste Treatment Plant.

"This 'hartal' (strike) will help the government realise the importance of the issue. At the same time, calling a strike is not the solution. We have to identify a proper waste management system," said Surendran Pillai, a local.

Some tourists in the city, who were unaware of the strike, wanted to return to their home turf before the situation could get worse.

"Until now, I haven't faced any problem. I have no clue why this is happening. The locals say that there is a strike here today, so I am thinking of leaving for the airport and going back to my city as soon as possible," said Venkatesh, a devotee from Hyderabad.

Moreover, the city corporation has decided to stop the collection of garbage from the residential areas and hotels.

Heaps of garbage could be seen lying on the road, with mosquitoes and other insects breeding on them.

The corporation has been apprehensive regarding the disposal of the garbage, due to the lack of space to dump the waste.

The BJP has demanded for an immediate solution to this never-ending hazard. (ANI)
