Kanpur, Dec 23 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) party, General Secretary, Prakash Karat slammed the UPA government's proposal to give reservation to backward class Muslims under the 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes.
Karat said the central government had taken the decision in a haste to appease Muslims as the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are scheduled to take place next year.
"According to the Ranganath Mishra Commission recommendations, it had asked for 15 percent reservation separately for the minorities and backward classes. He had asked for a separate quota as the central government has not accepted it and has given reservation to the Muslims in 27 percent quota. This will not prove beneficial for the minorities as the central government has taken this decision in a haste keeping in mind the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh," said Karat.
Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission which was set up in 2004, to look into the various issues related to Linguistic and Religious minorities in India had suggested 15 percent jobs in government services and seats in the educational institutions for minorities and sought about eight percent reservation out of the existing 27 percent quota for the minorities.
However, keeping in view the 2012 assembly elections in UP the proposed 4.5 percent reservation for backward Muslims in OBC holds political significance as well where Muslims have are substantial in numbers. (ANI)
