Kanpur, Dec 16 (ANI): Slamming anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare for threatening to campaign against the Congress party during the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma has challenged the former to come to his constituency if he has the courage.
Talking to mediapersons here Verma said: "Who is Anna? We have been engaged in politics all our lives and he has become a fasting master. What will he do here? Let him walk on our path if he has the courage to do it."
Hazare had recently stated that he and his team would campaign against the Congress in the upcoming polls of Uttar Pradesh, if the Central government fails to bring a strong Lokpal Bill in the ongoing winter session of Parliament.
The Uttar Pradesh assembly election is seen as crucial for the Congress party as the state sends the largest number of lawmakers to the national parliament. The party is also out of power in the state for the last 22 years.
The proposed Lokpal Bill drafted by Hazare and his aides envisages the setting up of a national anti-corruption watchdog to check financial mismanagement and corrupt practices that have deeply pervaded several democratic and civic institutions of India.
Hazare, who has been criticised in recent weeks over his half-hearted enthusiasm for the inclusion of socially backward groups under the ambit of the Ombudsman, has threatened to undertake a ten-day hunger strike on December 27 if the Bill is not passed in the form he wants. (ANI)
